Swamp Milkweed Pods. I think the swamp variety needs the cold stratification and if so i m not sure when to plant them. While the swamp milkweed asclepias incarnata pods have just started forming within the last 2 3 weeks.
I am ready to start planting my native pink swamp milkweed seeds in trays in a protective screened enclosure. I m still not clear if i need to cold strat since our temperatures rarely hit freezing 1 day only in 2014. Asclepias incarnata the swamp milkweed rose milkweed rose milkflower swamp silkweed or white indian hemp is a herbaceous perennial plant species native to north america.
Germinating swamp milkweed seeds.
Asclepias incarnata requires at least 30 days of cold stratification before it will germinate. The bright pink flowers attract swarms of bees and butterflies and have a sweet scent described as similar to vanilla or cinnamon. So hopefully within the next few weeks i ll be gathering a number of different milkweed pods to harvest the seed. Our butterfly weed asclepias tuberosa and common milkweed asclepias syrica seed pods have been forming for some time now.
